A white puppy sleeps inside an open wire crate, surrounded by soft blankets and toys, on a wooden floor in a cozy room.

Crate training has a bad reputation in some circles—but when it’s done right, it’s actually one of the kindest things you can do for your dog.

We’re not talking about locking your pup away. We’re talking about creating a cozy, calm little den—a space they choose when they need a break from the chaos of life (yes, even if that chaos is just you vacuuming).

Why Crates Aren’t Just for Puppies

Crate training isn’t just for potty accidents and teething phases. I’ve worked with dogs of all ages who benefit from having a place that’s just for them.

A crate can help:

🐶 Reduce anxiety and overstimulation

🐶 Improve nap routines and bedtime transitions

🐶 Keep your dog safe during car rides or vet visits

🐶 Give your dog a healthy break from kids, guests, or general household hustle

Think of it as a doggy version of your favorite comfy spot on the couch.

The "Den" Instinct is Real

Dogs naturally seek out small, enclosed spaces to rest. That’s why you’ll often find them under tables, behind furniture, or squeezed next to your bed.

A crate—when introduced positively—taps into that instinct and becomes a place they want to go. Not because they’re forced to, but because it feels safe.

The Key? Make the Crate a Good Vibe Only Zone

Here’s how I help my Long Island clients set up crate success:

✔️ Choose the right size (big enough to stand and turn, not so big they can potty in one corner and nap in the other) ✔️ Add soft bedding and a familiar-scented blanket

✔️ Keep the crate in a quiet spot where your dog can still feel part of the family

✔️ NEVER use the crate as punishment

When you do it this way, dogs voluntarily go into their crates for naps. I’ve had clients tell me their pups sneak in there with a toy just to chill!
